FIFA has long had Mexico as one of its main commercial partners, as it was the first country in the world to organize two World Cups (1970 and 1986), both iconic because they were the peak moments in the careers of what for many are the two best soccer players in history, Pel and Diego Armando Maradona.
Mexico wants to be the first country to host three World Cups
In 2026, Mexico is scheduled to organize, together with the United States and Canada, the third World Cup in its history, being also the first country to do so, however, several incidents, the last one last Saturday at the Corregidora Stadium in the city of Quertaro, have put into serious question the viability of giving this country the honor of organizing such event.
Mexico has been in the eye of the FIFA hurricane for several years due to several factors, all related to the fans that go to the stadiums, this time there was a massacre in a fight between Queretaro and Atlas fans in a Liga MX game.
Complaints from Mexican fans
This is why many in Mexico are calling for the country to be stripped of hosting the 2026 World Cup.
“Just as FIFA suspended Russia for the war against Ukraine, I hope they have the pants to SUSPEND Mexico at national team and club level for the ‘Quertaro Massacre’,” wrote Alvaro Martnez on Twitter. “What happened in La Corregidora has seriously wounded soccer, families and life.”
As well as this case many fans agreed on the demand to FIFA for an exemplary sanction to Mexican soccer.
Homophobic chant in Mexico
It is worth remembering that Mexico has already been sanctioned twice with the impossibility for its fans to enter the stands for the Concacaf qualifying games for the World Cup in Qatar 2022 due to the repeated occasions in which the fans made a homophobic chant against the opposing goalkeeper.
The scandal of “Los Cachirules”
In the past, Mexico has already been punished with not going to a World Cup, that happened in the edition of Italy 1990, due to the “Los Cachirules” scandal, since the Mexican Football Federation cheatedly registered players over the age limit of 20 years old with false papers in the qualifiers for the Junior World Cup in Saudi Arabia in 1989.
