Brief Company History
Walmart saw its beginning on July 2, 1962, when Sam Walton opened his first store in 719, Walnut Avenue in Rogers, Arkansas. The assortments, discounts and low prices offered by the retailer for its products soon popularised the store among the buyers. The immense popularity and buyers appeal also made Walmart expand its retail outlet, and by 1967, the retailer was operating 24 stores with a sale of $12.7 million. In 1967, the company was incorporated as Walmart Stores, Inc. The first Distribution centre was opened on 1971, in Bentonville, Arkansas, and the first Sam’s Club started operating on 1983, in Midwest City, Okla. The company got listed with the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol (WMT) on 1972.
Walmart began its first foray outside the United States and internationally, by opening a Sam’s Club, as a joint venture with Cifra in Mexico City. Over the years, the retail stores chain expands in many overseas countries, and by Fiscal 2012, the total number of overseas Retail, Wholesale and other Walmart stores reached 5,651 outlets in 16 countries. In the United States alone, the company has 4,479 retail stores, consisting of Supercentres – 3029, Discount Stores – 629, Sam’s Club – 611, and 211Neighborhood Markets and other small format Discount stores. Walmart operates in three segments: the WMT U.S. segment; the WMT International segment and the Sam’s Club segment.
Walmart is also 3rd biggest private employer and largest retailer worldwide and employs more than 2 million employees.
